Diamonds prepare for final leg of international tour
By Netball Australia
The intense 2009 international schedule for the Australian Netball Diamonds is drawing to a close, with two final Test matches against Jamaica in Kingston over the weekend to round out the year. Arriving in Kingston yesterday, the Diamonds are full of confidence after an 11 goal win against England earlier in the week but Diamonds captain Sharelle McMahon admits it is a challenge to keep her team up for the final two Tests after the busy year. “I think there is a little bit of weariness in the group as well but we know how important these games are,” McMahon explained. “We were out on court this afternoon and everyone was moving the ball really well so hopefully that’ll continue for the game.” With a touring party of 14 players, McMahon is confident about the Diamonds chances against the world number four. “There is a really positive feeling in the group after such a good win against England. “One of the good things about this group is there is a lot of competition for positions.” “We’ve got the Commonwealth Games coming up next year and it is a really good thing to have in your mind and keep you motivated as well.” The Jamaicans will pose a threat to the Australians winning record with the Sunshine Girls in fine form at the recent World Netball Series claiming the silver medal. “We are expecting really tough matches, we obviously came up against them in the World Netball Series and they are playing some really good netball at the moment.” “With Romelda (Aiken) there they have a big target in the goal shooter position and its going to be tough.” Jamaica Series - Diamonds v Sunshine Girls Saturday October 17, Kingston 5pm local time (18/10/09 9am EDT) Sunday October 18, Kingston 5pm local time (19/10/09 9am EDT)
