Australia to face New Zealand in WYNC Grand Final

By Netball Australia

It took teamwork, speed, intensity and an ability to keep cool under close and aggressive attention from the English side, for the Aussies to win this tough semi-final.

The Cook Islands humidity added to the heat generated by the two teams on court.

"We were challenged by England" said Australian 21/U coach Simone McKinnis "but from the first whistle we kept our composure and goal by goal opened up the gap."

The line up of Caitlin Bassett, Tegan Caldwell, Madison Browne, Shae Bolton, Andrea Gilmore, Sharni Layton and Amy Steel went goal for goal with England in the first quarter but managed to pull out to a five goal lead at the first change.

Australia won the second quarter by three goals to take an eight goal lead into the third quarter. Bassett was magnificent in goals even when the English defenders double teamed her in an attempt to shut her down.

Not only was it dangerous leaving Caldwell unattended but Bassett was strong in the air and took the ball over the top of both defenders.

A third quarter goal blitz put Australia 18 goals ahead. Gilmore in wing defence was outstanding in a beautiful display of clean and timely intercepts. The speed of the Aussies and the flow of their play were key factors.

Tairi was brought on to replace Bolton in the last quarter and the team quickly combined to bring the win home.

McKinnis said "they kept their heads when England came at them. The team`s persistance and willingness to work hard for each other were important to the win."

Australia will now face arch-rivals New Zealand, after they defeated Jamaica, 57-34 in the second semi-final.

Both teams were level at the first change, with New Zealand pulling away by five at half-time.

Suffering injuries at either end, Jamiaca fell away allowing New Zealand to grab the second Grand Final berth with a 23-goal victory.

Australia will take on New Zealand for the World Youth Netball Championship on August 20.
