What`s really going on in the Cook Islands: Diary Entry 5
By Caitlin Bassett and Laura Scherian
Finals have finally arrived WOOO! It’s about time as it’s starting to feel like we have been here forever! Our first final is against the home team the Cook Islands which is a good and bad thing. Good in the fact that we played them in a practice match before the tournament started so we have a good idea how they play, and bad because they will have a lot of supporters at the match. We ended up winning 86-17 which was really great. The girls stayed focused even though Ash Howard went down in the first few minutes with a knee injury. We all wish her a speedy recovery. The court had oily patches on it and we were slipping and sliding around like puppy dogs on a wet floor. The adopt a school program has been really fantastic and we had a great cheering squad singing ‘give me a home among the gum trees’, as well as support from Norma Plummer, Julie Fitzgerald and Julie Hoornweg. Even more popular than the adopt a school program is the adopt a parent program. For Tegan Caldwell and myself (Caitlin) who have no family over here we have become adopted parents for each other, while the others go and explore the island with their folks me and Teegs have quality family time and naps on the couch while watching Seabiscuit it really doesn’t get much better than that! Some of the team stayed behind to watch England play South Africa and New Zealand play Malawi as these are the teams we could possibly meet if we made the Grand Final. England defeated South Africa so we will play them tomorrow. Lunch on Monday was prepared by our team chef, just kidding we made our own lunches before the game! Nothing like a Villa cooked meal to get you going for a big game. Shae makes the most delicious iced coffee and they have been keeping us going in Villa two as well as the famous Milo soufflé, the only down side is that Milo is like gold over here and the price of a standard tin is about 22AUD. The dance zone in Villa one (the grotto as we call it because of its smell due to Sharni) has been deserted lately as we need to conserve all energy for our matches. Pin the tail on the Kangaroo is almost complete with only Norma’s tail waiting to find a spot. We had a beach “fun” session on Sunday which basically consisted of us throwing tennis balls at each other, thank god it started pouring with rain and we were spared the torture of beach flags, I can only “pretend” to lose so many times guys, you have to let others win sometimes (this is my attempt at a joke anyone who has seen me play can clearly tell I am no athlete). Some of the girls went to the Hotel’s coconut class and learnt about gathering, husking, and preparing coconuts, we have all tried drinking from a coconut and it is quite tasty, the liquid inside is clear and quite sweet. Today we are preparing to take on England. We had a slight sleep in followed by some stretching and ball skills on the hotel tennis court. We are all highly anticipating lunch today (as well as the final of course!) as Andrea Gilmore’s mummy is making us lasagna ... yummo! Wish us luck signing out Shezzie and Cbass....
