Australia gets second win in the Cook Islands

By Netball Australia

The Australian 21/U team have won their second pool match against Samoa at the World Youth Netball Championship in Cook Islands 89-38.

The Aussies started slowly and didn’t hit their straps until the second quarter with the Samoan goaling combination testing the Australian defenders throughout the game. However, Sharni Layton, Amy Steel and Shannon Eagland each took some magnificent intercepts to turn the ball over on numerous occasions.

Australian coach Simone McKinnis made five changes at half-time to bring on the remainder of the squad and this new combination took time to settle in the third quarter.

McKinnis was pleased with the result after telling the players at three quarter time to "take charge and finish it off".

The team came out firing in the fourth quarter scoring nine unanswered goals in the first three and a half minutes.

In this final quarter Shae Bolton and Laura Scherian hit the circle every time and fed the ball with precision to Caitlin Bassett and Teagan Caldwell.

Bassett was at her best scoring 20 from 20 goals in the last quarter. Layton, who has only just returned from injury, finished as she started taking the first and last intercept of the game.

McKinnis is managing her squad well and the team are building in intensity as the week progresses.

Australia takes on Botswana in the next pool match.
