Game Report: New South Wales have narrowly defeated Western Australia in Round 5 of the 19/U Dealsdirect.com.au National Championships. The Blues took an early lead and looked strong in attack and defence. With 2009 Under 17 Australian squad member Ellie Smart dominating the goal circle, WA looked to give NSW a close match. Leading 10-6 at quarter time, NSW centre Kathryn Thew and Verity Simmons provided the team with some strong attacking options through the mid-court. At half-time, NSW were four goals and with AIS scholarship holder Nicola Gray now in goal attack the reigning premiers looked to extend the lead. However, some simple errors from NSW and strong defence from the WA side, evened the score out to a three goal difference at three-quarter time. The final quarter saw some changes in the NSW line up and WA looked ready to cause an upset, closing the game to a one goal margin mid-way through the final quarter. WA Centre Tess Cransberg brought some height to centre and was a tough match up for AIS Scholarship holder Verity Simmons. The NSW team proved too strong, putting defensive pressure on WA at centre passes and causing them to pass around the court In the tense final moments NSW ran away with the lead, defeating WA 31-27 in an exciting display of netball. WA will face TAS in Round 6 tonight, while NSW will take on top of the ladder side Victoria in what is expected to be a close, physical match up.
