Game Report:
New South Wales has won their first 17/U National Netball Championship in five years with a 38-28 victory over Victoria at the Silverdome in Launceston, Tasmania.

After an unsteady, nervous first few minutes NSW secured the first break of the game and then quickly moved to a five, goal lead. Tight defensive work by the NSW defenders had their opponents working the ball around patiently looking for options, often to no avail.

Strong defensive work from Georgette Paatsch gave her team the Victorians the opportunity to regain some ground on the scoreboard but they were thwarted by NSW wing attack, Madeline Hay, who made a fine interception.

Victoria was able to finish well after some strong rebounding by their defenders, with the quarter time score 9-8.

The second quarter started goal for goal, with both teams playing strongly, until a missed shot by NSW allowed for a rebound by VIC and they capitalized scoring back a break to level the score at 11-11 half way through the term. However this would be the closest that VIC came to the retaining the 17& U trophy.

NSW, taking advantage of costly turnovers and strong defensive rebounds began to work the ball patiently into their shooters who didn’t let them down, scoring nine unanswered goals.

Victoria scored two late goals to gain some respect in the quarter, with the score 20-13 at half time.

The third quarter was more even contest with the NSW team outscoring VIC by only one goal. VIC would later rue early missed opportunities as the NSW defenders were relentless with their rebounds.

Three unanswered goals gave VIC some hope, but when Gloria Masiasomua, made a fantastic intercept much of the good work was undone.

Swift ball movement throughout the mid court and circle by NSW was proving to be problematic for the VIC defenders, however the Victorians were able to gain some late goals once again, going into the last quarter eight goals down.

Scoring first in the last quarter gave VIC some spirit, but the NSW team countered straight away and then made the break to edge away further.

Victoria played valiantly in the last quarter but could not match the strength or skill of the NSW team, who ran out worthy victors by ten goals 38-28.
