Game Report: Queensland has put on a determined display to finish fifth at the 17/U DealsDirect.com.au National Netball Championships, claiming victory over Tasmania 33-39 at ETSA Park on Monday. QLD’s strong defensive pressure proved the difference, with QLD never surrendering the lead and fighting off several comeback attempts from TAS throughout the match. QLD raced ahead with a four goal lead in the first quarter before TAS managed to win a rebound and get on the scoreboard. They made the most of their opportunities but their flow to the goal post was halted by QLD’s strong defence, leaving them to trail 8-12 at quarter time. The gap was quickly closed to just two goals in the second term, as TAS worked hard to make up some ground on the scoreboard. QLD soon capitalised on a turnover and managed to maintain the lead, going to the main break in front, 16-23. Both sides made changes in the second half, with strong shooting from Olivia Burnett and Jenna Kinross extending QLD’s lead to 10 goals and its tall defenders providing strong pressure in the goal circle. TAS scored three successive goals to bring the difference back to seven, but QLD had plenty of run in centre court and took a handy 25-32 lead at the final change. The gap was again close in the fourth, with TAS managing to bring the difference back to five goals with just two minutes left on the clock. But QLD’s strong defensive pressure again bought them some breathing space, with a turnover in Tasmania’s goal circle driving the ball forward and giving QLD a six goal win.
