Game Report:
The Queensland Fusion have got their 2011 Australian Netball League campaign off to the perfect start defeating South Australia 57-54 in a closely fought encounter at the AIS Arena in Canberra.

Both sides took time to settle into the game with Queensland getting the opening goal of the game through goal attack Candice Adams after two minutes.

The scores then see sawed before South Australia gained a three goal break thanks to accurate shooting from their shooters Melissa Rowland and Cody Lange.

Queensland, through their mid court players Laura Scherian and Jacqui Russell fought hard to get the scores back to 8-all but South Australia edged clear late on to end the quarter leading 14-12.

South Australia began the second quarter strongly and quickly extended their lead to four goals.

But just as they did in the opening quarter Queensland worked their way back into game, firstly drawing level and then taking the lead at the seven minute mark (21-20) through a goal from Candice Adams.

Queensland increased their work rate and as a result broke the game open leading 31-24 with two minutes left in the quarter and then 33-26 at the half time break.

South Australia got the opening three goals of the third quarter to get within five goals of Queensland.

Both teams then went goal for goal but South Australia were starting to gain the upper hand and when goal shooter Cody Lange goaled with a two minutes to go in quarter they led by a goal.

But Queensland scored two late goals through Sophie Croft and Ameliaranne Wells to regain the lead and head into the final quarter with a one goal lead (43-42).

South Australia’s Cody Lange got the opening goal of the final quarter with Queensland Coach Jenny Brazel forced to bring on her gun defender Chanel Gomes.

Scores again fluctuated as both sides looked to gain the upper hand.

But it was Queensland who got the vital break leading 55-50 with three minutes left on the clock.

South Australia refused to give up and with one minute left got within two goals with possession.

But a Gomes intercept and goal from Fusion goal shooter Wells saw them win in the end 57-54.
